How to use Turmeric Seeds to grow a plant?


How to grow a turmeric plant? You’ll need the following things to successfully grow your own turmeric plant:

1. Climate

Turmeric plant is tropical, native to India. So, an ample sun, moderately warm temperatures, and regular water is required for its growth. It can be grown in many places that provide these conditions. It takes around 8-10 months to grow and harvest turmeric. People usually plant it in the winter and harvest the following fall to early winter. You can grow it either in the ground or in containers. 

2. Location

Turmeric needs sunlight, yet is a little sensitive to scorching. It grows well in full sun to partial shade, but benefits from afternoon shade in the hottest weather (over 90°). It requires the most water when in the growing process, but not much before it sprouts. This is because the unsprouted rhizome seeds can rot when standing in water or soggy-soil in the long run.

3. Container

Don’t skimp on size when you’re trying to search for the perfect container to grow turmeric. Get as large as you possibly can without making it a burden. You can even get several smaller pots since turmeric doesn’t require deep soil. 10-12 inches can work perfectly fine. Width and surface are the factors that matter if you’re willing to harvest a decent amount of turmeric. The turmeric seeds (rhizomes) you plant will require many inches of space between them to grow successfully. Thus, narrow containers limit the quantity you plant.

4. Soil

The soil must contain these characteristics to grow turmeric:

  • Well-draining
  • Loose
  • Rich in organic matter
  • Free of big clumps or rocks


If you wish to have big hands of turmeric or other larger pieces, then break them down into more seed pieces. This should be done a few days or a week before planting. Use a clean knife for cutting the hands or rhizomes at the narrowest junctions to make several seeds. 

Every seed piece must have at least 2-3 fingers left behind – because this sprouts! After cutting, set the pieces in a location with good airflow to promote drying of the exposed. 

Prior to planting, store the rhizomes in a temperate, dark area. You can also store them in a warm, shallow, coco coir, damp layer of peat moss, or light fluffy soil for early sprouting. 


People who grow turmeric outside, rather than growing it indoors, should plant rhizomes when the soil is around 55° warm, having daytime air temperature nearly 70°F. 

To plant, put each rhizome 2-4 inches deep, having at least 4-6 inches space in between. To prevent breaking the fingers, dig a small hole, pop it in, and cover it back. Place the rhizome in the hole with any small fingers or nubs facing up. The sprouts grow from the nubs, setting them up in the right orientation from the beginning. Moisten the soil by watering. 


Tumeric leaves turn yellow-brown and dry when it’s time to harvest. When harvesting, use a trowel or hands for harvesting. Slowly dig in a wide pattern around the stalk of turmeric to loose the soil. Be careful so you don’t damage the rhizomes. Once it is loose, you can either pull up on the stalks or scoop them from the bottom. If you meet the resistance, you might be willing to dump the container over sideways and sift through the contents instead. 

Once you’re done harvesting, wash the rhizomes to remove the dirt. Remove the hand and roots carefully from the stems. Let them dry before storing it.
